Maine Winterfest and Ice Derby

Maine
WinterFest is Maine’s largest Ice &
Snow Sculpting event and draws
carvers from around the world. Both
events draw thousands. The major beneficiaries of the
new combined event are Camp Sunshine,
Maine Children’s Cancer Program and
Maine Fisheries.
The event kicks off with a Friday
afternoon free Kid’s Beginner Derby.
Five hundred beginners, 12 and under,
will be given a free ice fishing rig.
Volunteers from the Windham/Gorham Rod &
Gun Club and other groups will be
available to teach participants how to
ice fish.
Other events and exhibitions during the
action-packed weekend include a Lighting
Ceremony for the giant Dragon Slide and
Ice Sculptures, and Ice Racing of Cars
and Motorcycles “Under the Lights”. The
Sebago Lake Rotary’s Ice Fishing Derby,
Maine’s richest derby with thousands of
participants, also takes place with over
$40,000 in prizes in the Togue only
tournament.
There will be a slide down a giant fire
breathing dragon for kids, free skating,
dog sled rides, snowmobile jumping
exhibitions, snowboard exhibitions, the
famous “Ice Mall” with winter goods from
furs to sporting goods, Ice Sculpture
miniature golf, Ice Sculpture photo
shop, plus food and beverages of all
types.
The
Sebago Lake Winter Fly-in features various aircraft landing on the
ice runway, helicopter rides and balloon
rides. A 10 km Sebago Lake Cross Country
Ski Race. Sebago Lake Snowmobile Speedrun on the Point Sebago “Ice
Runway” will take place along with
Antique Snowmobile exhibit and
Snowmobile Jumping exhibition. And the
annual Sebago Lake Ice Shack Contest is
always an entertaining display of
creativity in the cold.
A couple of the charity events include
Maine Children’s Cancer Program’s Polar
Ice Dip and the “So You Think You Can
Dance” for Camp Sunshine Contest.
